Design and Technology
Our D&T lead is Miss Wight
At Peel Brow School, we believe that a quality Design and Technology curriculum should allow children to utilise and explore their creativity and imagination whilst creating a purposeful product for specific use. We want every child to think critically and innovatively whilst they design, make and evaluate their product. We expect pupils to learn the art of resilience through the process of critically evaluating and re-designing and making their own product. In addition, key skills are taught and are regularly rehearsed to enable children to benefit from a practical and valuable skill set which enables children to build upon their prior knowledge. We have high standards of what the children can achieve, therefore encourage the children to produce works that challenges and extends their knowledge and abilities as well as being a platform to be an ‘inventor’ and think creatively. The skills that pupils will acquire at Peel Brow aim to ensure that pupils are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare them for the world they live in, today and in the future.
The National Curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
- build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
- critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
- understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
We aim to expose all children to a coherently mapped and balanced curriculum that is sequential across each year group and is progressive throughout the school. Design and Technology is timetabled regularly throughout the year to allow meaningful opportunities for children to learn and rehearse key skills with a purposeful cross-curricular approach linking to the wider curriculum in areas such as textiles, 3D modelling, complex structures and food and nutrition. Learning builds upon prior learning therefore developing depth of understanding and progression of skills.
The intended impact for pupils at Peel Brow School is clear: progress, sustained learning and transferrable skills. By the time pupils complete their Design and Technology education with us, we aspire for them to be enthused, resourceful, innovative, and resilient learners who have a clear understanding of the purpose of Design and Technology in today’s society and their role within this as the ‘inventor’.
