Art and Design
Our Art and Design Lead is Miss Christiansen
At Peel Brow School, we believe that our Art and Design curriculum should engage, inspire and challenge all children to develop their creativity, imagination and equip all pupils with the knowledge and skills that they need to experiment, develop and create their own art works.
Our curriculum aims to develop the children’s skills, concepts and knowledge in a variety of areas across the artistic spectrum. Children will explore and evaluate the works of a diverse range of significant artists and designers from across the world. Children will also be able to evaluate the effectiveness of their own and their peers’ artwork.
We want all children to leave Peel Brow with a passion and love of the subject as it has allowed them to build a natural inquisitiveness and an appreciation of art in all its forms which they may carry with them throughout their lives.
The National Curriculum for Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
The knowledge and skills that children will develop throughout each topic within Art and Design has been mapped sequentially across each year group and is progressive throughout the school. The emphasis on knowledge ensures that children understand the context of the artwork, as well as the artists that they are learning about and being inspired by. A similar systematic approach to the development of artistic skills means that children are given opportunities to express their creative imagination, as well as developing mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture. We have high standards of what the children can achieve, therefore encourage the children to produce works of art that challenge and extend their knowledge and abilities as well as being a platform to express themselves
The intended impact for pupils at Peel Brow School is clear: progress, sustained learning and transferrable skills. We want all children to have developed a passion for art and creativity, working both independently and collaboratively. Pupils will have grown in confidence when using a range of tools and techniques, becoming artists that can apply the skills and knowledge that they have developed throughout the years and respond critically to their own and others’ work.
